Sixteen-year-old Ellie Lauder doesn’t belong. Although she has grown up in the underground shelter with the descendants of those who survived the amber rain, their rejection drives her to a dangerous course of action. She flees outside to a vast wilderness that, according to what she’s been taught, shouldn’t even exist.

A young adult, post-apocalyptic science fiction adventure, Amber Rain is a story about having the courage to forgive the past and find love in an unstable world.

This is a lovely piece and can certainly be read by younger audiences, but with some violence (but by nowhere in the league of violence as Hunger Games). It holds the attention as Ellie struggles with dealing with her classmates to her discovering a new world and struggling to find her place within the new community as well to discovering who she is and growing as a character. And it even follows the girl she got mistaken for as she also tries to fit in with a different environment. I especially loved Ellie's brother Paul and loved their relationship, even though it was a minor detail in the story. In all, Amber Rain is a fun dystopian experience that reinvents the world with new threats and different ways of living and the task of surviving.

Loved it! One of my favorite readd
I really liked the book, and I hope it is the first of many of a series(?).
Thank you Alyssa.

I would call this dystopia lite at best. It wasn't a waste of my time nor was I bothered by it, it just was too...cutesy. Not i word I'd ever have thought to use with this genre. If there were additional books I would read them in hopes that there would be more meat to a fairly interesting theme. However, I would not outwardly recommend this book. For me, the genre is about people doing things in extraordinary circumstances, the power of hope and love, and the growth of the characters through their struggles. Again, this book tapped (lightly) on these issues, but took none beyond superficial. With all the really good books out there, I wouldn't waste my time.
best book ever I did not want it to end. this book would make a great movie. please write a second book and not have any bad guys
This book had some great concepts and interesting ideas, so it's unfortunate that it also had some inane garbage mixed in. The first thing I should say is that ultimately I enjoyed this book more than I didn't and I would best describe my ultimate feeling as a missed opportunity. Coming in at just over one hundred and twenty pages, it isn't very long and that is maybe to its credit and discredit.

Some minor spoilers

To start with what made this book interesting is you have a post apocalypse world which is the basis for some very interesting stuff. The world background sets the stage for modern people to come into contact with tribal people who are unfamiliar with technology. The story itself in a lot of ways makes this front and center as you are then able to view both worlds (modern and tribal) from the eyes of the opposite inhabitants, which is really neat. Furthermore you get to see personal conflicts (first world problems) play out vs life and death problems from the point of view of actors from the opposite world. This is the books biggest strength by far and why I kept reading. It is very unfortunate that the book is so short and didn't focus entirely on these aspects, as well as unfortunate that many aspects of this had to be glossed over in order to leave room for the parts of the book put in which did not belong.

And now the bad. This book includes two implausible, terribly written romances that frankly belonged in another book. A much worse book. It bothers me that the authors felt they needed to give both main characters hetero-normative hook ups. It bothers me because being a short book these hookups meant time that should of been spent on what made this book worth reading, was taken away for what makes this book not worth reading. The hookups are both bad, neither have chemistry or foundation. It was basically Hi, I'm courting age single person of the opposite sex that you just met and I'm relatively nice to you. Therefore we should hookup. Yes it's basically that weak. Not enough time is spent with anyone in the story to give background to them or reason for them to hookup and whats worse, one of the characters had a relationship that just ended (horribly) and suddenly is going to be looking to start a new one? I mean to be fair she resists (barely) but it amounted to the same thing in both cases. Very badly written relationship smut for fantasizing something that very frankly just did not belong in this book period. Also it was badly written.

In conclusion if you should or should not read this book, I lean on it being worth a read. It is short, it has some good concepts and ideas that are unfortunately white washed with the cliche.
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were likeable and engaging. I agree with another reader here who said that it took a bit to get into the story but once I did I couldn't put it down. I am looking forward to the next in the series and will buy it when I see it. All in all it was an awesome read. Well done!
I thought this was a great book. Some other reviewers seem to always have so much negative to say if a story isn't exactly like they think it should be. Maybe they should try writing a book and see how hard it is! Then if they do maybe they would learn humility and humble themselves when others give such negative feedback! Why must so many people tear others down instead of building them up? Sad.
The storyline in this book was very interesting to me and I hope the authors write more books and delve into the characters lives more. Thanks for a great book.
