The Christopher Killer Forensic Mystery (Audible Audio Edition) Alane Ferguson Veronica Taylor Audible Studios Books

I have one thing to say about this forensic mystery targeted at YA readers. Really great book, and really terrible cover.

I haven't read a lot of gritty forensic mysteries with a younger protagonist, so that's what drew me to the book. Catelyn is just about to graduate high school, and wants to become a medical examiner. That's handy, since her father's the town coroner. When a local murder shocks the small town, she has a front row seat to all the evidence and the investigation.

Of course in addition to a murder mystery, there are relationship issues and family issues, as one would expect in a YA novel. In this book, there's the mystery of Catelyn's mother who left years ago, as well as two young men she can't decide are threats or allies. There's also an interesting theme parsing out where science meets religion meets fake mumbo jumbo when a famous psychic comes to town. And of course there has to be danger, and there's plenty of that.

The forensic scenes were well done--just enough ugly reality and facts to keep things interesting without going full CSI and being gross. The interactions were also well done. I found this an easy book to read, and was sorry to see it hasn't done better. This is a case where I hope the author gets the rights back and is able to republish at some point. I think the publisher did this book a disservice.

Overall, a very enjoyable murder mystery, suitable for both adult and YA readers.

love it
Excellent audio!
Excellent read. Supposedly for teens but if you like the Patricia Cornwall series you will like this one also. Main character is 17 years old but wants to be a forensic pathologist.
I am a Reading Resource Teacher and I am always on the look out for interesting books for teens and young adults. The Christopher Killer is the very intriguing look at the world of forensics without being disgusting or gorey. The students that have read it, truly enjoyed it and I must say, I enjoyed it as well.
Fabulous book! The detail of the dead man floating with maggots crawling under his skin.....I could actually see it. I really enjoyed every page of this great story. I loved the autopsy. I was proud of Cameryn for asking about the odor and the skin color after the Dr. tried to intimidate her to silence. Can't wait to start the second book.
BUY the whole series! I wish she would write more! This is a well-written series and love the setting. Really enjoyed it.
Overall 4 Stars

Plot/Storyline 4 Stars

I purchased this book simply because I love murder mysteries, especially those involving serial killers. I also enjoy young protagonists, although usually those that appear in novels geared toward adults, rather than YA books, but I wanted to give this one a try. I figured it would be like reading an "adult" book of this genre, minus all the blood and gore. I don't mind blood & gore (B&G), of course, but I can definitely enjoy a book without it.

This book didn't really skip that B&G, but it did water it down somewhat, as the serial killer used a `clean' method of strangulation and did not sexually assault the victims. However, there was a detailed autopsy scene. Having read way too many books involving autopsies, I can't say that I learned much from the scene, but it was still interesting, and I can see where it could be very educational for many. The scene did drag on rather long, even though it was pertinent to the conclusion.

I was surprised after such a detailed autopsy scene to find that the author did not want to adhere to reality further when it came to police investigation. For one thing, as the killer crossed state lines, I would have thought that case would have been taken over by the FBI immediately. They were conspicuously absent, especially for such a high profile case.

The `red herrings' were rather mild and easily discarded. The most interesting thing to me was the creative method used of subduing the victims.

Character Development 3 Stars

I found Cameryn's character to be rather shallow. She just didn't give much thought to deeper issues, like her missing mother. I felt as though her desire to enter such a unique career could have been explained better. These issues aside, she was still a pretty interesting character.

The other characters were just deep enough to avoid being called `cutouts.' Most of them really needed a lot more depth.

Writing Style 4 Stars

The writing style was a little simplistic at times, even for a YA novel. If the author had been actually speaking to me, at times, I would have felt as though I were being talked down to. With this subject matter, I assume the target audience was kids in their late teens. However, the tone was geared more toward pre-teen.

The descriptions were pretty good with some nice, if mundane, metaphors. The dialogue was very well done.

Editing/Formatting 5 Stars

Both were of professional quality.

Rating PG-14 for Mild Violence, Light Blood & Gore
